In honor of Cinco de Mayo, I wanted to post a quick little activity that Therapist's can implement for Language students (preferably those working on sequencing); however, with every Language activity you can squeeze in Wh' questions.
So simply poll your students/clients on their favorite Mexican dish (my students in the past have picked Taco's or Chip's and Salsa). Next, discuss what would be needed to create these dishes (have them think about what their parents use when making these dishes). Then use sentence a dry erase board or poster to write down the ingredients needed. *Note: having visual aids such as pictures handy to assists as prompts always help. Once this is completed, use sentence strips to write the steps of preparing these dishes (you can make this step as detailed as you need depending on the child's cognitive level). Finally, have the children place the sentence strips in order; discussing each step along the way.
Parents: This activity can also be conducted at home as a carryover activity.
Remember with our language kids, we always want to find opportunities to facilitate language. Skills learned in therapy should be implemented beyond the therapy room.
